15 Favorite Free Fonts

As a graphic designer, I spend much of my day working with fonts. We are all familiar with fonts but do you really understand what fonts do – beside the obvious of course. Using a cooking analogy, I like to think of fonts as the herbs, spices and condiments that add flavour to your meal; without these flavour combinations, meals would be somewhat boring and bland.

There are thousands of fonts available but as a designer I find I tend to go back to the many of the same fonts over and over because they work in so many scenarios. Of course, many of my standby fonts are commercial fonts that must be purchased before you can use them but luckily now there are many lovely fonts available for free too. I’ve selected some great fonts that can be downloaded for free (personal use only). Some free fonts offer an option to donate to the designer and as a fellow designer I often try to give them a small donation if I can afford to do so.  Please keep that in mind if you have the means because it takes a long time and effort to develop and design a font package.

Monster and Ghost Spray Away

Stay away monster and ghost spray

Stay away monster and ghost spray

Monster and Ghost Spray Away – At some point, most parents hear their children say “I’m scared to go to sleep because there’s a monster under my bed.”  I know we went through that almost 2 years ago when we moved into our new house.  Noelle was petrified that there was a monster in her closet.  We tried everything we could think of but nothing diminished her fear.  Then after doing a bit of research online I heard about “monster spray”.  I quickly jimmied up a spray water bottle with a cute label and gave it to Noelle to keep the monsters away.  That was all it took, after that she wasn’t afraid of monsters any more!

Now I can help pass along this parenting gem by giving you this printable label.  Simply print the file out on a piece of paper, trim to the appropriate size and stick to a spray bottle.  Just use a regular water bottle with a spray nozzle.  If you can, add some sort of scent to the water so that your child believes the spray has magical monster and ghost repelling qualities (lemon, orange, vanilla or essential oils would all work well). Sweet dreams!

Blank Faces Coloring Page 2.0

Blank Faces Coloring Page 2.0 – Thanks to all the incredible comments and feedback I’ve received from my original “Blank Faces” post, I’ve decided to do a follow-up post.  When I originally created this page it was just a cute colouring page I threw together to entertain my daughter.  Never is my wildest dreams did I expect the mass interest in something that seemed so simple and unassuming.

Since releasing the original post, I’ve been contacted by hospital staff, researchers, teachers and therapists.  It’s currently being used in emergency rooms, pediatric cancer wards, special education services, Autism research groups and psychologist’s offices.  I would be remiss if I didn’t mention all the parents and grandparents who have thanked me for helping to keep their little ones entertained too. I have been overwhelmed with thanks and this simple and innocuous coloring page has opened my eyes to the world of need out there. With that being said, this coming week I have an appointment to visit  my local hospital to donate a large package of  “Blank Faces” coloring pages to our local pediatric ward  (as well as the Robots page, I-Spy, and Jellyfish bracelet templates).

One bit of feedback that I received from my original design is that people wanted to see more ethnically diverse faces so that a variety of children can relate better to the images.  So with that in mind, I have created the next in the series of faces that I hope will accomplish that task.  I want to say in advance that obviously these images are huge generalizations and I am wary of doing anything that may offend or neglect certain individuals or groups.  So please keep in mind that this was only created with the best and noblest of intentions.

Please continue to comment on what or who you printed these pages for.  I love hearing from you.

Lunchbox Love Notes

Lunchbox Love Notes – A new school year is upon us and we’re settling back into our routines.  I’m super lucky that I have a wonderful husband who makes our daughter’s lunch every day. Let’s face it, making lunches isn’t the most pleasant job but obviously it has to get done so why not make it a little more exciting… well, exciting for the kids that is.  Just think of how surprised your child will be when they find a love note with their lunch.

Simply print out the template, place sticky notes inside the designated squares and print your lunchbox love notes… easy peasy as my daughter would say.

Download lunchbox love notes template here.

*Please make sure you know how your printer operates before you try this.  It’s really important to make sure the Post-it note goes through the feeder in the correct position – always with the sticky strip facing towards the top of the page. I purposely made this template in only black ink for a couple of reasons: you can use this on any colour Post-it Note and not everyone has access to colour printers. Inspired by this wonderful original post here.
