Free Cross-Hatch Button-Up Cowl Crochet Pattern

Cross-Hatch Button-Up Cowl Crochet Pattern – Winter is quickly approaching but I have to be honest and admit that it’s not my favorite season, but at least I’ll be cozy this winter with this thick and rich cross-hatch button-up crochet cowl.

I actually crocheted this cowl back in August while I watched my daughter swim at the lake – how’s that for being prepared! I’m sure all the other beach dwellers were thinking “um, kinda hot out here to be making a scarf.”

This cowl is the perfect crochet pattern for beginners or even the more experienced crocheter. It is super easy and quick to make; I made it in one day. The yarn I used is really soft and I love how thick and luxurious it feels when I wear it.

It’s the perfect crochet scarf pattern – make one for yourself and then make more for the special people in your life!

ROWs: 3 -47 (or until it reaches 35” in length): Repeat row 2.

ROW 48: sl st in first 3 sts, carry on as usual as per row 2 until the last shell space, then 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, sl st into the last st.

Break yarn, weave in ends.

FINISH:

Sew on your buttons. One end has 4 points and the other end has 5 points. Lay the finished piece down with the end with 4 points on the right and the end with 5 points on the left. To figure out the placement of buttons, on the end with the  5 points and side closest to you, sew the first button between shell 1 and shell 2 in the 3rd row (the center of the button should be about 2” from each edge).  The second button should also be between shell 1 and shell 2 but should be further down in row 7, approx. 3” from the center of the other button. Once complete, wrap the cowl around your neck and button the buttons in the space between the shells in between rows 2 and 3.

Printable Secret Decoder Wheel Instructions

HOW TO MAKE THE DECODER WHEEL:

  1. Cut out the circles below and stack in order from the number 1 wheel on the bottom, then number 2 wheel and finally number 3 wheel on the top.
  2. Attach the three discs by carefully poking a round brad fastener (or thumb tack with an eraser behind) through the middle of all three wheels.

HOW TO USE DECODER WHEEL:

  1. Pick a letter on the outer wheel and a number in the inner circle – this is your key (ex. M21). Turn the inner wheel so that the number (21 in our example) lines up with the out wheel letter (M in our example). On our wheel 21 also corresponds with R in the shaded section. Don’t move the wheels now, keep them in place.
  2. First, write your message. No numbers (write them out), and no punctuation.
  3. For each letter of your message, find that character on the outer wheel, and write down the letter that is exactly beneath it on the inner wheel until your message is complete.
  4. To read the encrypted message get the key from the message sender and align the wheel – keep the wheel in this position. For each letter of your message, find that character on the inner wheel, and write down the letter that is exactly above it on the outer wheel.
