Bugs & Butterflies coloring page

This weekend we did our first camping trip of the 2015 spring/summer camping season along the breathtaking Juan de Fuca Marine Trail on Vancouver Island. Camping along the Pacific West Coast is one of our family’s favorite past times. We had an amazing time spending three days out in nature.

During our camping adventure, we saw a myriad of wildlife, sea life and interesting creatures including a close encounter with a black bear (see photo below). Camping in the forest and on the beach among all the flora and fauna, I was inspired to get out my sketchbook and draw some cute little insects and butterflies.

Download and print your bugs and butterflies coloring page here.

Please note, these drawings aren’t really anatomically correct but rather fun “interpretations” of bugs and butterflies in general. My daughter loves these coloring pages and the butterflies are her favorite insects to color. I’m sure there’s lots of nature lovers out there who will enjoy these coloring pages. Happy coloring!

Mandala coloring page

Mandala Coloring Pages – These beautiful circular designs are called mandalas. Mandalas are as old as history itself and mean “sacred circle” in Sanskrit. In various ancient and spiritual cultures including Buddhists, Tibetans, Hindus and North American Indians, the mandala has been used as a form of meditation, in sacred rites to aid in healing and to invoke spiritual energy. Mandalas have often represented life, nature, creation, wellness and the universe.

Today mandalas are used as a form of art therapy. Drawing and coloring mandalas is known to have a centering, calming effect for both children and adults. For elderly people, coloring mandalas helps them increase focus and concentration.  People are often intimidated by a big blank piece of paper and they may get anxious not knowing how or what to draw.   Pre-made mandalas help give people a comfortable starting place with little fear of failure. Just by adding a little bit of coloring, people suddenly become artists and have a great sense of accomplishment when they are done. You can use  coloring pencils, pen and ink, crayons or watercolor to color mandalas.

I had so much fun designing these mandala coloring pages – that in itself was therapeutic. I’ve created these pages with 12 mandalas to a page and also larger mandalas with two pages of 6 mandalas.  You can download the 12 mandalas to a page here and the 6 mandalas to a page here. Enjoy and happy coloring!

Monster’s for your kids to color.

Monsters Coloring Page – The air these days is colder and crisper, the leaves are beautiful shades of red, orange and yellow and the sky is grey more often than blue… fall is here!  The kids are starting to think about the upcoming holidays including Halloween. I’m looking forward to seeing all the cute little ghosts and ghouls this year.  While we’re waiting for this scary and magical day, I thought it would be fun to create a monster coloring page in honour of the upcoming holiday.

Blank Faces Coloring Page 2.0

Blank Faces Coloring Page 2.0 – Thanks to all the incredible comments and feedback I’ve received from my original “Blank Faces” post, I’ve decided to do a follow-up post.  When I originally created this page it was just a cute colouring page I threw together to entertain my daughter.  Never is my wildest dreams did I expect the mass interest in something that seemed so simple and unassuming.

Since releasing the original post, I’ve been contacted by hospital staff, researchers, teachers and therapists.  It’s currently being used in emergency rooms, pediatric cancer wards, special education services, Autism research groups and psychologist’s offices.  I would be remiss if I didn’t mention all the parents and grandparents who have thanked me for helping to keep their little ones entertained too. I have been overwhelmed with thanks and this simple and innocuous coloring page has opened my eyes to the world of need out there. With that being said, this coming week I have an appointment to visit  my local hospital to donate a large package of  “Blank Faces” coloring pages to our local pediatric ward  (as well as the Robots page, I-Spy, and Jellyfish bracelet templates).

One bit of feedback that I received from my original design is that people wanted to see more ethnically diverse faces so that a variety of children can relate better to the images.  So with that in mind, I have created the next in the series of faces that I hope will accomplish that task.  I want to say in advance that obviously these images are huge generalizations and I am wary of doing anything that may offend or neglect certain individuals or groups.  So please keep in mind that this was only created with the best and noblest of intentions.

Please continue to comment on what or who you printed these pages for.  I love hearing from you.
