Introduction to Crochet Christmas Stockings
Start a new Christmas tradition with this collection of christmas stocking crochet patterns.
Christmas stockings are a classic Christmas decor that can be found in almost every home that celebrates the holiday. Crocheted Christmas stockings make great heirloom decor that can be passed on each year.
Crochet stockings are a practical gift idea. Aside from being decorative pieces, they are also functional. Fill them with goodies for your family and friends to enjoy.
They also make a fun holiday crafting project. You can make a Christmas stocking for every member of the family, including your beloved pets!
How to Crochet a Simple Stocking
So how do you crochet a Christmas stocking?
Crochet Christmas stockings can be worked flat or in the round. Either way, can also be stitched from the top down or the toe up.
Toe-up stockings worked in one piece typically start with a magic circle or chain closed into a round to build the foot of the stocking. Stitches are then increased to the size needed for the foot which is then worked in straight rounds.
Shaping for the heel may be included, the leg is worked and you finish with the cuff.
For a top-down pattern, you would do the same but in the opposite direction, working down to the toe.
When pieces are worked flat, the stocking is usually an L shape. You will start at the top and work down the leg, then increase for the foot. Both pieces are worked the same and then sewn together, leaving a hole at the top of the leg.
Supplies Needed to Crochet a Christmas Stocking
To make a crochet Christmas stocking, you will need your basic crochet supplies.
You will need some yarn and the recommended crochet hook. Make sure to consult your pattern for the recommended yarn weight and crochet hook size. If your pattern calls for bulky or super bulky weight yarn, you will need bigger-sized crochet hooks to work with thick yarn.
You will also need a yarn needle and some scissors. You may also use a stitch marker to help you keep track of the end of the round if you are working in the round.
Best Yarn for Making Crochet Stockings
Many Christmas stocking crochet patterns use worsted-weight yarn, which makes a good-sized Christmas stocking. Some of the popular worsted-weight yarns you can use to make crochet stockings are Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Lily Sugar’n Cream, Caron Simply Soft, Red Heart Super Saver, and Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton.
Some Christmas stocking crochet patterns use bulky or super bulky weight yarn. Some favorites in these categories are Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, Knit Picks Brava Bulky, and Bernat Velvet.
Faux fur yarn such as Lion Brand Go For Faux and Fable Fur are also popular choices to use for stocking cuffs.
Tips for Making Crochet Stockings
Crochet stockings are great projects for crocheters with only a few projects under their belts because you don’t have to worry about getting the “right size,” especially if you are making them for decor.
However, there are a few things you might want to keep in mind as you make your crochet Christmas stocking.
First, check your Christmas stocking crochet patterns for the recommended yarn weight. You can use a different yarn weight than indicated in your chosen pattern, but keep in mind that the size of your stocking will change depending on the yarn you used. If you substitute a worsted weight yarn for a pattern that calls for a bulky weight yarn, then your stocking will come out smaller. Make sure to check your pattern for gauge and instructions regarding yarn substitution.
Next, read through your pattern before you begin to make sure you understand the instructions. Some free crochet patterns for stockings only use basic stitches such as single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc) and double crochets (dc). But there are crochet stocking patterns that make use of special stitches to create different textures. You may need to know how to work stitches in the front loop only (flo) and/or or back loop only (blo).
If you need help with the basics, check out our Crochet Fundamentals workshop. It includes quick tutorials and skill-building lessons on everything from changing colors to working in the round, increasing and decreasing, and other skills you’ll need to crochet stockings or anything else with confidence.
Lastly, enjoy the process! Making your own crochet Christmas stocking is a lovely way of adding festive holiday decor to your home, and creating your own Christmas tradition.
