Teddy bear crochet
crochet teddy bears

Teddy bears are a classic stuffed animal that everyone adores. They are cute, huggable, and fun. Crochet teddy bears make great soft toys for both kids and adults alike.

Crochet bears can be made in any size and design. They make great gifts for friends and loved ones because you can easily customize them for your recipients.

Making crochet bears can be intimidating for some crocheters, especially those who are not familiar with amigurumi. However, you do not need to love to make amigurumi to make crochet teddy bears. Below you will find a list of fun and adorable teddy bear crochet patterns – from easy to advanced amigurumi patterns to blankets, pillows and crochet bear accessories.

Table of Contents

Can a Beginner Crochet a Stuffed Animal?

Definitely! To be able to make a crochet bear (or any stuffed animal) you will need to have basic crochet supplies and know some basic crochet techniques.

Supplies

To make a crochet teddy bear you will need your basic crochet supplies. You will need some yarn, a crochet hook, a pair of scissors, and a tapestry needle. If making amigurumi crochet bears, you will also need some fiberfill stuffing, stitch markers, embroidery thread, and safety eyes.

Pro tip: Use a crochet hook that is one size smaller than what is recommended for your yarn of choice to make sure you get nice, tight stitches.

What Kind of Yarn Do You Use to Crochet a Teddy Bear?

The type of yarn you will use depends on the project you are making. For amigurumi projects, cotton or cotton-blend yarns are a great choice. Cotton is soft and durable, and holds its shape very well, which gives your projects great stitch definition. Some cotton or cotton-blend yarn you might want to try are Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, Patons Grace, Alize Cotton Gold, and YarnArt Jeans.

Of course, you can also use acrylic yarn such as Red Heart Super Saver, Caron Simply Soft, Premier Yarns Premier Anti-Pilling Everyday Worsted, and Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling. Acrylic is hard-wearing, washable, and inexpensive, and it comes in a huge variety of colors.

For bigger and cuddlier plushies, you can use chenille, velvet, or even faux fur yarn such as Bernat Velvet, Bernat Blanket, Premier Parfait Chunky, Himalaya Dolphin Baby, and Lion Brand Go For Faux.

For amigurumi projects, you can use a smaller or bigger yarn weight than what is suggested, but keep in mind that it will definitely change the size of your crochet bear, and you will need to adjust your hook size as well.

Make sure to consult your pattern to check the yarn details before you begin your project.

Stitches and Techniques

To make amigurumi crochet bears, you will need to know some of the basic crochet techniques.

You should know how to make a magic ring or magic circle. Most amigurumi projects start this way. It is the surest way to ensure that your work is tightly closed.

If you cannot make a magic circle, you can opt to start with chain stitches. Just chain a few and join the chain into a loop with a slip stitch. Then you can work your stitches into the loop.

You will also need to know how to do the single crochet stitch (sc). This is the basic stitch used for amigurumi because it creates a tight, dense fabric. You should also know how to make single crochet stitch increases and decreases.

For some crochet patterns, you will need to know how to make a half double crochet (hdc) and double crochet (dc). Some patterns will ask you to work in the front loop or back loop of your stitches to achieve a certain texture or look.

Because amigurumi is usually done in continuous rounds, you will not be using a slip stitch to join your stitches at the end of each round.

Pro tip: It will be helpful to use a stitch marker to help keep your place so you know where the end of each round is.

You will also need to know how to sew the parts of your crochet teddy bear together. Check out this video from Ami Amour which shows you two ways to join amigurumi pieces.
