Introduction to Crochet Cat Patterns
Many stitchers have feline friends, so it makes sense that crochet cat patterns would be popular in amigurumi and home decor.
Just like our real cat companions, each of these projects has its own personality and is so much fun to stitch for a child, a cat-loving friend, or for yourself.
If you are not into amigurumi, purr-haps you can try making any of the cat-themed patterns for accessories and decor.
How Do I Crochet a Cat?
Even beginners can make a crochet cat, as long as you know how to follow a pattern. You will need to have basic crochet tools like a crochet hook, and some yarn. You will also need to know basic crochet skills.
Basic Stitches and Skills
To be able to make these crochet cat patterns, you should know how to read and follow instructions from a pattern. You will need to know the basic abbreviations used in crochet patterns, as well as how to make the basic crochet stitches.
Most amigurumi patterns start with a magic ring or a magic circle. These crocheted toys are made in continuous rounds (with no slip stitches) or joined rounds (with a joining slip stitch at the end of each round).
Amigurumi cat crochet patterns usually use the single crochet stitch (sc). You should know how to do a single crochet stitch increase (inc) and the invisible decrease (inv dec). Some designers also prefer doing a yarn under instead of the usual yarn over when making single crochet stitches to achieve that “x” look in amigurumi.
Other cat crochet patterns make use of basic stitches such as the half double crochet and double crochet.
What Yarn Do I Need to Make a Crochet Cat?
Crochet cat patterns often use a cotton yarn or a cotton-acrylic yarn blend, especially amigurumi cat patterns. This is because cotton holds its shape well and gives great stitch definition.
You can also use polyester yarn such as velvet and chenille for a bigger, softer, and more huggable amigurumi cat.
For other crochet cat patterns, you can use acrylic yarn. These free crochet patterns often use worsted weight yarn, but other weights can also be used.
Of course, you can use any yarn available, just take note that the size of your final output may be different from the pattern.
Here are some of our favorite yarns to use for making crochet cat patterns:
(1) Super fine/Fingering
(2) Fine/Sport
(3) Light/DK
(4) Worsted
(5) Bulky
(6) Super Bulky
Supplies Needed to Make a Crochet Cat
You will need the recommended crochet hook for the yarn that you are using. Keep in mind that for amigurumi cat crochet patterns, the pattern might suggest using a smaller crochet hook than you normally would for that weight of yarn.
That’s because a smaller hook will give you tighter stitches, which makes it harder for the batting to be seen inside the toy.
You will also need some stitch markers, especially when working in rounds. When you have fastened off, you will need scissors and a yarn needle and sew in your ends, and do other finishing to secure the work so it will not unravel easily.
If making amigurumi cat crochet patterns, you will also need some polyfill stuffing and safety eyes. You may also need a safety nose (if your pattern calls for it) and some embroidery thread for face details like whiskers.
